Have you ever been to a truly poor country? I am not going to try to define what is a “truly” poor one, but there are 26 countries with less than one thousand USD in gross domestic product (GDP) per capita. How many of them do you think are in Africa? It goes without saying that most of the world’s poorest countries are in Africa. But how bad is it?
Very bad.
23 of the 26 countries with a GDP per capita of less than 1,000 USD are in fact in Africa, according to the World Bank. It measures GDP in USD per capita divided by the population (midyear). The 2010-2014 figures show that the poorest country in the world is 385 times poorer than the richest.
